Come to The Well

One of the beautiful mommies in my practice recently asked me a fantastic question. One that I know many of you will benefit from as well.  She asked me, "What should I do for my baby in between his chiropractic adjustments to stay in alignment?". Although the particulars of this answer are different for an infant, a child, and an adult, if we get to the root of what causes a subluxation (spinal misalignment interfering with the nervous system) we will begin to unravel the mystery.
So what does causes a subluxation? Hearkening back to first quarter Chiropractic Philosophy, the founder of Chiropractic, D.D. Palmer, said it was thoughts, toxins, and trauma.  To put it another way, the spine can misalign from chemical, physical, and emotional stress.
Lets consider some potential physical stressors for a newborn.  There's the birth itself, cradle lying for long periods of time, car seats, baby jumpers, etc.  To avoid these leading to misalignments parents can hold baby, wear baby facing the parents chest in a wrap, and take advantage of tummy time.  Some potential chemical stressors for baby can be from too much indoor air as carpets, furniture, and fabrics can give an off gas of chemicals that when breathed in can be harmful; formulas can contain chemical additives and preservatives which can be harmful to the child; breast milk if the mommy is eating foods that are highly inflammatory (dairy, sugar, packaged foods, soy, and grains); and lastly baby personal care products if not natural. To avoid subluxation due to chemical causes, try keeping windows open if weather permits, don't put baby on new mattress or rug without letting it air out for a week in a well ventilated area. Try to breastfeed and eat as many organic veggies, fruits, nuts, lentils, beans, meats, and wild caught small fish as possible.  If you do use formula use organic and avoid soy.  Lastly, use fragrance free detergent and use natural soaps with only a couple ingredients.
The last category is mental/emotional stress.  As outlandish as it may sound even newborns and infants can experience emotional stress.  The best thing you can do to help your child's peace is to create peace and joy in your own life as parents.  Sleep when you can (I know... can feel impossible at times), drink lots of clean filtered or spring water, listen to meditation tracks or classical music while with baby, spend time enjoying your significant other, make even 30 mins a week to do something you enjoy (dancing, going to church, playing a sport, watching a TV show, playing music, being outdoors, etc.).  Wake up each morning and play what my mom and Polyanna call the "glad game".  See how many things throughout your day you can appreciate and be glad for, even if you're tired or feel lousy or are aggravated.  Maybe you can appreciate a 5 minute nap, or your baby's smile, or a sunny day.  I hope this gives some insight to all the moms and dads out there.  Remember you're not in this alone.  We at The Well are here to help take care of your little ones and you.  When everyone in the family is at their optimal health and healing we have our best chance to reach our potential.  Blessings for all your families!

Why All Children Need Gentle Chiropractic Care

When many of us think of Chiropractic we think of adjustments of the spine to help mitigate neck or back pain.  Many of us rarely think of adjusting children. Why?  When we stop to listen; however, the body can talk to us in powerful ways and help direct us to full healing whether we are a week old or 100 years old.
So what are some ways the body would talk to a child and tell an infant they needed to be checked for spinal misalignment?  Well, lets start by addressing what spinal misalignment is.  There are 24 movable vertebrae in the spine.  These spinal bones should be in a particular alignment not just for lack of neck or back pain but for full expression of health, healing and human potential.  What does that flowery sentence mean?  It means that every organ, tissue, muscle, and cell in our body works properly and feels good when there is life and healing going to it.  The spinal misalignment, or subluxation, can interfere with our body's ability to send that information to and from the brain.   If there's a misalignment of the vertebrae that interferes with the nerve going to the heart for example, the heart will not function at its best.  If that misalignment is left there over time the heart will start to progressively break down and build disease.  This is why its best, as with any health concern, to address it as early as possible.  This is why kids need chiropractic care to be their best.
Back to the body talking.  What are some things you can think of that a child might experience that would lead a parent to take him or her to a pediatric chiropractor?  Let's explore!  The first is colic.  Colic is defined as crying more than three hours a day for more than three days a week for three or more weeks in a row.  The cause of colic is considered unknown medically, but don't you think its possible that little baby's body is trying to communicate something? That perhaps it isn't at peace with his or her function and healing? So what can be done? Chiropractic.  Often babies who have colic have spinal subluxation near the top of their spine.  How could a little baby get a misalignment you might ask?  One word.  Birth.  If you've had the pleasure of seeing or giving birth you'll understand.  On average a baby being born has 60-80 lbs of pressure on their tiny, undeveloped neck.  This can certainly cause a subluxation.  In another sense, when babies' spines are gently checked and corrected the tension and aggravation to their nervous system is removed and they can finally rest.  Then the need for crying is no longer there.  For a parent who has had a colicky baby you'll understand what a big gift this is! Every child with colic should be checked and adjusted.
Another way a little one's body may speak to you is inability to latch, nurse, or gain weight.  Rule of thumb is anything that isn't promoting health, development, and well being is a sign of subluxation.  Often times, those same top bones of the spine that when misaligned create irritation that can lead to colic are also the culprits for trouble nursing.  Have you ever slept wrong and couldn't turn your head all the way to one side as compared to the other? Likely you were experiencing a subluxation with muscle tension as an effect.  The same thing can happen to your child.  If they have a subluxation in their neck and its not corrected not only will they not be able to nurse, but that decrease in nervous system communication can lead to many more health concerns down the line like ear infection, allergies, trouble learning and concentrating, low immune system (more likely to get colds, flu, cancer), and lower resistance to mental or emotional stress to boot.  Just as with colic, all children showing signs of nursing trouble should be checked and adjusted by a pediatric chiropractor.
Although there are many more examples, the last one I'll address here is digestion/elimination.  A child who has an upset tummy, is having diarrhea, or constipation is very likely displaying effects of a subluxation.  Unlike the first two, sometimes a lower spinal bone is misaligned with this warning signal.  Some people will tell parents it is normal if their child doesn't have a bowel movement in a couple days.  This is not normal.  Food in waste out is a natural and normal process.  If food is going in daily waste should be eliminated daily.  Another common way the body talks to babies is reflux.  A baby who is experiencing reflux, especially when getting the proper nourishment is a sure sign of subluxation.  When the body cannot digest food properly not only will the child experience an unpleasant symptom but he or she will not be growing and developing properly.  Food is how our body makes new cells and grows.  Without it the body may not reach its full potential.  A prominent Nutritional Therapist that works with our practice members at The Well often reminds me and the rest; its not that you are what you eat, but you are what you digest!
If your child or a child you know is suffering from an effect of subluxation, please call us and schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. Shelby.  Give your kids their best chance.  Choose Chiropractic.  Choose Life.

The rule for harmonious conversation is never talk politics or religion, right? Well, having grown up in the bible belt, this is not my motto,  Have you ever had a friend or family member ask you to pray for a health concern? While I believe that prayer is powerful and helpful I also believe that solutions come in all shapes and sizes.  Sometimes a full on miraculous cure is in order.  Other times, though, healing may be much more subtle.  Often times we ask for help coming from a place of worry, panic and fear.  Someone we know has been given a seemingly hopeless diagnosis.  If only they would be miraculously healed on the spot, or the scientists researching a cure would find the antidote today and all would be well.  This may be the path we choose, but if this doesn't leave you in a place of peace and power don't lose hope, there is another path.  This path is the path of trust and surrender.  Its about recognizing and appreciating that we did not create ourselves.  And the One who did is all good and all powerful.  Our bodies are created with a life, a power inside of us.  Equally given to every person to function and heal.  There is no need to panic, no need to worry.  There is already a healing and driving force in the body that is always at work and only slows down if we have placed barriers in its path.  Our healing capacity can be blocked through eating junk food, choosing to be stressed out, and from structural misalignments in our body that can be corrected through regular chiropractic care.  Why not choose peace? Why not let the God to whom we pray be glorified through our perfect body he created.  Why not see the natural bounty of food and drink and peaceful prayer and chiropractic as an answer to prayer?  Why do we have to think of only yogis or Buddhists that take care of their bodies naturally? Isn't the body the temple of God for all people?
An early Christian, St. Paul, writes, "Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, for ever and ever.  Amen."   Let your body heal.  Come to The Well.

As the new year is here so are our new health goals.  Maybe you want to be as strong as,  be as mentally sharp as, feel as good as when you were younger. Its possible!  If you haven’t already added holistic chiropractic to your family’s health routine you may want to start.
New research shows that a strong neuroimmune system has a lot to do with how healthy we really are. The immune system (what fights off colds, flus, ear infections, sinus and allergies, and regulates autoimmune conditions) is controlled by the nervous system.
The most important way to regain and maintain a proper nervous system is a gentle wellness chiropractic adjustment, researchers suggest.1  If the spinal vertebrae are ever so slightly out of their normal place, irritating the nerves, it will weaken our immune system, slow our bodies down and create disease over time.  We take pressure off nerves naturally so your body can heal itself as it was created.
Come experience true wellness care like you’ve never experienced before.  Treat yourself to health this year.  Come to The Well.  Enjoy your life.

Welcome, New Yorkers, to the grand re-opening of your urban oasis for health and healing.   Here we will be glad to support you, all of you.  Holistic health is when your body is of sound structural health, chemical health, and mental-emotional health.   At The Well we address all of your health needs by focusing on first how the body was created to work.  God created each one of us with a master control system.  That central control is made up of the brain, spinal cord and nerves.  For every muscle, organ, or cell to work what must happen is this: Power must be transmitted like electricity from the brain down the spinal cord over the nerves to the muscle or organ.  Then the muscle and organ send signals back to the brain.  This is how the parts of our body connect and work as a whole.  Imagine that communication starts to break down. How do you think our bodies respond? Do you think our bodies would build health or disease when communication is broken? Unfortunately, if connection is slowed or broken or fuzzy our bodies start to work poorly and develop illness whether we feel it right away or not.  This is how people can get a diagnosis like heart attack or cancer without always knowing its there.  What if there were a way to detect and even prevent this poor communication so the body would always have its best chance of working for us? There is.  This is what we help patients with every day.  Come in to get an fast and easy analysis of your nervous system the holistic way.  You've never experienced health care like this before! Come see what we're all about and how your life can change forever.  We welcome you and extend peace and joy this Christmas season.  Give the gift of health to your family this year.  Give the gift of life.  Give the gift of The Well!
Health and Blessings Always,
Dr. Shelby
